Abstract

In spring 1999 Oulu University Library conducted a survey (N = 731) on the role of literature, specifically textbooks, and other forms of studying and teaching in university studies. The survey was carried out at 13 examinations in the faculties of Humanities, Education, Science and Technology.

The survey shows that books play a very important role in university studies: 78 per cent of the students considered literature either important or very important for their studies. The importance of literature increases as studies progress. Lectures were felt to be important by 66 per cent and lecture outlines by 77 per cent of the students. The students felt that there are not enough textbooks in the library: 25 per cent of the respondents had encountered problems when looking for a textbook in order to prepare for an examination.

65 per cent of the respondents had used networked resources in their studies, but they are used to complement printed materials, not replace them.
