Abstract
This thesis deals with a novel ceramic CuMoO₄ (CMO), and reports on its low sintering temperature, good microwave dielectric properties and thermochromic behaviour in a mode suitable for practical applications. It involves a detailed investigation of CuMoO₄ (CMO) ceramic, its Ag₂O added composite (CMOA) and a thermochromic CMO polymorph mixture for advanced materials proposals to energy concerns. The initial part of the thesis is devoted to the development of the CMO ceramic and CMOA composite by a solid state ceramic route and by an additive manufacturing process respectively, followed by an investigation of the structural, microstructural, and microwave dielectric properties. The prepared CMO ceramic was found to have an ultra-low sintering temperature of 650 °C, a relative permittivity (εr) of 7.9 and a quality factor × frequency (Qf) of 53000 GHz at 12.7 GHz. It exhibited a temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf) of -36 ppm/°C. The CMOA composite attained an even lower sintering temperature of 500 °C and showed a εr of 8, a Qf of 36000 GHz (11.8 GHz) and a τf of -32 ppm/°C.
The developed CMO ceramic and CMOA composite were made into ultra-low temperature cofired ceramic substrates by tape casting using environmentally benign organic compositions and cofiring with Al at 650 and 500 °C respectively. The sintered CMO and CMOA substrates had an average CTE value of 4.1 and 4.6 ppm/°C respectively measured in the temperature range of 25–300 °C. At 9.9 GHz, these substrates showed εr and tan δ of 7.5, 7.7 and 0.0002 and 0.0004 respectively. Additionally, a new CMO polymorph mixture was prepared from the developed CMO by cryogenic quenching using liquid nitrogen. It exhibited irreversible thermochromism from a deep brown to a bright green colour in the temperature range of 25–200 °C.
The findings of the present research reveal the different functional aspects of CuMoO₄ ceramic that can be utilised for ULTCC microwave and smart applications. Hence, the thesis presents an advanced ceramic material for future technology.
