Abstract
In this thesis, we propose and study two different communication networks, (i) unlicensed (dynamic) spectrum access and (ii) local licensing models, to be used in the future communication technology, 5G, and more specifically, smart grids. In the unlicensed spectrum access model, the licensed and unlicensed nodes share the same frequency band, allocated to the uplink channel. However, the unlicensed nodes cannot harm the licensed nodes’ communications. On the other hand, in the local licensing model, the network operator holds the exclusive license for its own network spectrum usage. The Poisson point process is used to model our proposed networks, and to conduct the mathematical analysis in this thesis, we use different concepts of stochastic geometry and communication theory.
Our first contribution is the two previously mentioned proposed communication models, and the assessment of their reliability, with or without retransmissions. We derive the closed form of the outage probability for the local licensing scenario and an approximated outage expression for the unlicensed spectrum access approach. In all these analyses, the finite blocklength notion is also considered. We also analyze the effect of retransmissions on the reliability and delay of each network. Moreover, we study the unlicensed spectrum access in more depth, analyzing this model in terms of the optimal throughput and energy efficiency. We study the throughput in a constrained optimization problem, constrained by the number of retransmissions and the SIR threshold. It is then shown how different network metrics such as the density of interferers, outage, and the SIR threshold can affect the throughput and energy efficiency of this model. Lastly, we study the energy efficiency of the optimal throughput and show why it is more feasible to have only a limited number of retransmissions in the network, rather than a very large number of retransmissions.
