AbstractColorectal cancer has become one of the most common types of cancer. Primary intervention is a complete surgical removal of the tumor. Technical development in surgery, anesthesia, and pain management enables patients to return home only after a few days of hospital-stay. Therefore, the healthcare professionals need to start counseling to provide the required information and support to the patients already before surgery. The purpose of this study was to describe the healthcare professionals’ perceptions of the content of the preoperative counseling for colorectal cancer patients. Data was collected by a theme interview. Twenty-five healthcare professionals participating in preoperative counseling were chosen from three hospital districts in Finland. Both group and individual interviews were used and the data was analyzed by an inductive content analysis. According to the results, the content of the preoperative counseling concerns the information about the illness and its treatment, the perioperative care and about the psychosocial support as well. The preoperative information about the illness consists of the knowledge about a potential cancer diagnosis, results of investigations, treatment options, a plan for the patient’s care, the need for surgery and about cancer as a disease as well as about the extent of the disease and its prognosis. The information on the treatment deals with the date of the operation and the hospitalization as well as empowering the patient to be active in surgical care. The hospital discharge will naturally be discussed too. The information concerning the perioperative care consists of the knowledge about the operation, an ostomy, anesthesia, the factors contributing to the operability and about the risk factors of the operation. TiivistelmäYleistyvän suolistosyövän ensisijainen hoito on kasvaimen poistaminen. Uudet leikkaustekniikat ja kehittynyt anestesia- ja kivunhoito mahdollistavat potilaiden kotiutumisen jo muutaman hoitopäivän jälkeen. Terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten onkin aloitettava potilaiden ohjaus jo ennen leikkausta, jotta he saisivat tarvitsemansa tiedon ja tuen. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten käsityksiä suolistosyöpäpotilaiden preoperatiivisen ohjauksen sisällöstä Suomessa. Aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla ohjaukseen osallistuvia terveydenhuollon ammattilaisia (n=25) kolmen sairaanhoitopiirin alueella ja analysoitiin aineistolähtöisellä sisällön analyysillä. Tiedonantajien mukaan ohjauksen avulla pyritään antamaan potilaille yksilöllisesti tietoa sairaudesta ja sen hoidosta, tietoa perioperatiivisesta hoidosta sekä psykososiaalista tukea toipumiseen. Tieto sairaudesta sisältää tietoja syöpäepäilystä, tutkimustuloksista, hoitovaihtoehdoista, kokonaishoitosuunnitelmasta sekä leikkaushoidon tarpeesta, syövästä sairautena ja taudin levinneisyydestä ja ennusteesta. Tieto hoidosta käsittää tietoja leikkauksen ajankohdasta, hoidosta sairaalassa, potilaan omasta osallistumisesta toipumisessa sekä kotiutumisesta. Tieto perioperatiivisesta hoidosta koostuu tiedosta leikkauksesta, avanteesta, anestesiasta, leikkauskelpoisuuteen vaikuttavista tekijöistä sekä leikkauksen riskitekijöistä. Tiedonantajien mukaan potilaiden toipumista tuetaan psykososiaalisesti kiinnittämällä huomiota psyykkisten voimavarojen vahvistamiseen, sosiaaliseen tukemiseen ja elämään leikkauksen jälkeen. see all
