Tiivistelmä

Loman tarkoitus on palauttaa työntekijän voimavarat.

Abstract

Vacation (holidays) generally implies a restricted period of time which an individual spends during the year outside their ordinary work or duties using the time for recovery, rest, recreation, traveling or other leisure activity. Vacation is usually taken annually but its frequency, duration and quality may vary. Vacation is mainly considered to be associated with health benefits, but potential harms must also be recognized, such as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic and its spread in holiday resorts. In a few observational follow-up studies, shorter annual vacation has been associated with higher long-term morbidity and mortality, especially depression and cardiovascular disease. Benefits of vacation are often explained by the effect-recovery theory: allostatic load accumulated during work is relieved during vacation leading to biological, psychological and social recovery. These effects have been supported by randomized trials, although the effects are often short lived. Improving the quality and form of vacation could be a solution.
