Description: |
AbstractThis article aims to bring about a discussion of online ethnography, and ethnography as an element of nexus analysis (Scollon and Scollon in Nexus analysis: Discourse and the emerging internet, 2004). I discuss the establishment of a zone of identification through participation and how participation can be seen through different types and levels of activity, involving so-called lurking. These processes may also be affected by different stereotypes researchers in the north have to face. Maintaining a reference to my personal experience, I finally discuss how these expectations can be broken, using real-life examples drawn from gaming, far-right activity and conspiracy theories. see all
