This thesis examines the ”Vocation Play”, one of the school plays included in the Orationes -manuscript, from the point of view of how the play reflects the English society of its era. Orationes is a collection of plays and orations performed in King’s school in Canterbury from 1666 to 1675. The aim of this thesis was to discover how the societal situation in Restoration England is mirrored in the play. Social history is the theoretical framework behind the thesis but as the play is a literary work, the method of study is literary criticism and specifically historical criticism based on J. R. De J. Jackson’s book Historical Criticism and the Meaning of Texts. The analysis was also based on a large number of historical studies the contents of which was used when examining the societal contents of the utterances of the play’s characters. Seven socially significant topics were chosen as areas of study. The first five topics are related to societal groups, the last two are related to the standard of living. The societal topics are social stratification and money, religion, law and lawyers, women and lower classes. The other two topics are food and drink and clothing. It became apparent in the analysis that societal subjects are widely discussed in the play. The most significant results were that the English society was a class society in which there was much inequality caused by the uneven distribution of wealth. This inequality is also openly admitted and discussed in the school play. There was a large amount of luxury products and comforts available for the wealthy part of the population. The world of the play is strongly masculine and all the protagonists are men. The central values propagated by the school proved to be nationalism, Anglicanism and royalism. The analysis proved that it is possible to find socially significant contents in a school play. Thus, other school play from the same era could be successfully analysed from a social historical point of view and new perspectives concerning life in the this era could be found. A subject for further study could for instance be comparing school plays from this perspective.

Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee ”Vocation Play” -näytelmää siitä näkökulmasta miten näytelmä heijastelee oman aikakautensa englantilaista yhteiskuntaa. ”Vocation Play” on yksi Orationes -kokoelmaan sisältyvistä koulunäytelmistä Orationes on kokoelma Canterburyn King’s school -poikakoulussa vuosina 1666–1675 esitetyistä koulunäytelmistä. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten 1600-luvun loppupuolen yhteiskunnalliset olot Englannissa näkyvät näytelmässä. Tutkielman viitekehys on sosiaalihistoriallinen, mutta koska kyseessä on kirjallinen teos, tutkimusmenetelmänä toimi kirjallisuusanalyysimenetelmistä historiallinen kritiikki pohjautuen J. R. de J. Jacksonin teokseen Historical Criticism and the Meaning of Texts. Analyysin apuna käytettiin myös suurta määrää historian tutkimuksia, joiden valossa näytelmän hahmojen repliikkien yhteiskunnallista sisältöä tarkasteltiin. Tutkimuskohteiksi valikoitui seitsemän aihealuetta, joilla on yhteiskunnallista merkitystä. Ensimmäiset viisi ovat yhteiskuntaryhmin ja viimeiset kaksi ovat elintasoon liittyviä aiheita. Viisi ensimmäistä aihetta olivat sosiaalinen stratifikaatio ja raha, uskonto, laki ja lakimiehet, naiset sekä alemmat sosiaaliluokat. Elintasoaiheet olivat ruoka ja juoma sekä vaatetus. Analyysissä selvisi, että yhteiskunnalliset aiheet olivat laajasti esillä näytelmässä. Keskeisimmät tulokset olivat, että näytelmän mukaan englantilainen yhteiskunta oli luokkayhteiskunta, jossa oli paljon varallisuuteen perustuvaa eriarvoisuutta. Eriarvoisuus myös myönnetään koulunäytelmässä suoraan ja peittelemättä. Varakkaille oli tarjolla suuri määrä luksustuotteita ja mukavuuksia. Näytelmän maailma on myös vahvasti maskuliininen, ja kaikki protagonistit ovat miehiä. Koulun keskeisimmin välittämät arvot olivat nationalismi, anglikaanisuus ja rojalismi. Tutkielman tulokset todistivat, että koulunäytelmästä on löydettävissä yhteiskunnallisesti merkittävää sisältöä. Täten myös muita saman aikakauden koulunäytelmiä voitaisiin menestyksekkäästi tarkastella sosiaalihistoriallisesta näkökulmasta ja löytää siten uusia näkökulmia aikakauden elämään. Jatkotutkimuksena näytelmiä voisi esimerkiksi vertailla keskenään tästä näkökulmasta.
