In this study I analyze the character of Tony Stark as both a mythical hero and a modern heroic figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. My primary materials for this analysis are the movies Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Marvel’s The Avengers. I chose these movies for the study because they all feature Tony Stark in a significant role and are part of one continuous story arc. To evaluate whether he resembles mythical heroes I utilize two established patterns. One of these is the pattern of a mythical hero’s life presented in Lord Raglan’s The Hero: A Study in Tradition, Myth, and Drama, while the other is Joseph Campbell’s pattern of a hero’s journey as defined in The Hero With a Thousand Faces. I apply Raglan’s pattern to the story arc and the character presentation across all three movies, comparing the character to Raglan’s own examples. As Campbell’s pattern is modelled after single adventures, I use it to analyze each movie separately, with a later summary of the general trends. In addition to mythical heroism, I also evaluate Tony Stark as a modern heroic figure. The theoretical background for this part consists of Veijo Hietala’s Media ja suuret tunteet and Ulla-Maija Peltonen’s and Ilona Kemppainen’s article Muuttuva sankaruus. With these depictions of a contemporary hero as a basis, I consider the way heroes are viewed and presented in the movies themselves from the viewpoint of the characters. This is done first separately for each movie and finally in summary for the entire character arc. The analysis shows that the story of Tony Stark as Iron Man in the movies follows rather closely the patterns found in legends of mythical heroes. Raglan’s pattern of a hero’s life closely mirrors his life, and the pattern of Campbell’s journey can be found in every movie. Furthermore, while at the beginning the character is presented as an admired figure with few heroic qualities, by the end of his character arc he has developed into a heroic figure willing to sacrifice himself for others.

Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoin Tony Starkin hahmoa sekä myyttisenä sankarina että modernina sankarihahmona Marvelin elokuvauniversumissa. Pääaineistonani tällä analyysille ovat elokuvat Iron Man, Iron Man 2 ja The Avengers. Valitsin nämä elokuvat tutkimukseen siksi, että Tony Stark on niissä kaikissa merkittävässä osassa, ja ne ovat osa yhtenäistä tarinakaarta. Arvioidakseni sitä, muistuttaako hän myyttisiä sankareita, käytän kahta jo muodostettua kaavaa. Ensimmäinen näistä on myyttisen sankarin elämää kuvaava kaava, jonka Lordi Raglan esittää teoksessaan The Hero: A Study in Tradition, Myth, and Drama, kun taas toisena on Joseph Campbellin kaava sankarin matkasta, jonka hän määrittelee teoksessaan Sankarin tuhannet kasvot. Analyysi osoittaa, että Tony Starkin tarina Rautamiehenä seuraa hyvin tarkasti niitä malleja, jotka voidaan nähdä legendoissa myyttisistä sankareista. Raglanin kaava sankarin elämästä heijastaa hänen elämäänsä hyvin läheisesti, ja Campbellin matkan kaava voidaan nähdä jokaisessa elokuvassa.
