This pro gradu thesis is an investigation into the Have Your Say message board on the BBC website. The tools used in this research are the Appraisal framework and a computer programme for lexical analysis WordSmith 5. The aim of this study is to investigate the Internet message board language with the tools that the framework offers and to display the frequencies of lexical items in the message threads by using WordSmith 5 Tools. The methods used in this study are the Appraisal framework which is used to categorise and explain the usage of lexical items in the Internet messages. WordSmith 5 Tools that are used are WordList and Concord. The frequencies of lexical items and Appraisal analysis are presented in the tables. The corpus in this study consists of messages from one year from February 2010 to February 2011. There are 1800 messages in 18 message threads that include topics from different areas of life from education and politics, child benefits, university fees and elitism to weddings, drinking, bus services, weather conditions, airport security, new technology, April fool pranks, London Olympics, neighbours from hell, young people and living in the city or the countryside and the questions whether God created the universe and if aliens really exist or not. The message threads are compared to each other and concordance lines for chosen lexical items are presented. The Appraisal framework is used to categorise the evaluation found in the messages. Grammatical words are the most frequent lexical items and nouns are more frequent than adjectives. The lexical items categorised with the Appraisal framework are mostly adjectives. The frequencies for lexical items good, little, probably, certainly and very are presented. The patterns for good, little and most are also presented. In addition to that ten chosen lexical items from each message thread are presented in the tables and 46 examples from the messages in the Have Your Say corpus which are all analysed with the framework. There were most occurrences in the category of Appreciation and in the subcategories of positive and negative Valuation. The findings in this study are repeatable because all the message threads and concordance lines for the lexical items in the tables can be accessed in the appendices 19–54 at the end of this thesis. There were some challenges in categorising the items, because some items can belong to different categories depending on the context and the appraised item. There is always some subjectivity in this kind of research.

Tutkin pro gradussani BBC:n Have Your Say -keskustelupalstaa. Tutkimuksessa käytetyt teoriat ja tutkimusmenetelmät ovat Appraisal framework ja korpuslingvistiikka. Käytän tutkimuksessani WordSmith 5 Tools -ohjelmaa, joka on sanaston analyysiä varten kehitetty tietokoneohjelma. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tutkia Internetin keskustelupalstoja viitekehyksen avulla ja esitellä lekseemien frekvenssejä WordSmithin työkaluilla. Tutkimuksessani käytetty viitekehys on Appraisal framework. Sen tarkoituksena on arvioida evaluatiivista kielenkäyttöä eri konteksteissa ja kehyksellä jaotellaan sanastoa kolmen pääkategorian ja alakategorioiden avulla. Appraisal frameworkin lisäksi tutkimuksessa käytetään korpustutkimuksen metodeja aineiston analysoimisessa. Valittujen lekseemien konkordanssirivit ja kollokaatiot esitetään analyysissä sekä viestiketjujen sanalistoja ja esimerkkejä analysoidaan viitekehyksen avulla ja tuloksia esitetään sekä taulukoissa että viestiketjujen esimerkeissä. Tutkimuksessani käytetty aineisto on kerätty Internetistä BBC:n kotisivuilta Have Your Say keskusteluforumin blogista. Keräämääni Have Your Say -korpukseen kuuluu 1800 viestiä 18 viestiketjussa. Have Your Say -korpus muodostuu helmikuiden 2010–2011 välisenä aikana kirjoitetuista viestiketjuista. Analyysiin kuuluu viestiketjujen 46 esimerkkiä, 180 taulukoitua lekseemiä ja jokaisesta 18 viestiketjusta valittu konkordanssirivistö. Aiheina näissä viestiketjuissa on koulutus, yhteiskunta ja politiikka, lapsilisät ja lasten kasvatus, uusi teknologia, aprillipilat, nuorison asuminen maaseudulla tai kaupungissa, lentokenttien turvallisuus, alkoholin käyttö, Lontoon olympialaiset, häät, linja-autoliikenne, sää, naapurit ja kysymykset loiko Jumala universumin ja onko ufoja todella olemassa. Tutkin myös lekseemien kollokaatioita eli yhdessä esiintyvien sanojen kokonaisuuksia. Aineistossani luokittelin viitekehyksellä enimmäkseen adjektiiveja. Korpuksen suurin frekvenssi oli kieliopillisilla sanoilla a, the, of ja koko aineiston adjektiivien ja adverbien frekvenssit esitetään lekseemeistä hyvä, pieni, luultavasti, varmasti ja todella. Analyysin esimerkeistä eniten löytyi esiintymiä asioiden ja instituutioiden positiivisen ja negatiivisen arvioinnin luokasta. Tutkimus on toistettavissa ja validi, koska tutkimuksessa käytetty aineisto, taulukoissa analysoitujen lekseemien konkordanssirivit ja kaikki alkuperäiset viestiketjut ovat tämän gradun liitteissä 19–54. Tällaiseen tutkimukseen liittyy aina hieman subjektiivisuutta, koska lekseemejä voi jaotella viitekehyksen avulla sanan kontekstista riippuen moneen eri luokkaan.
