Diplomityön aiheena oli päiväkodin suunnittelu Turkuun Vilkkilänmäelle. Työ sisältää rakennussuunnitelman ja selostusosan. Suunnitteluun painottuvaa työtä taustoitettiin selostusosassa muun muassa tutustumalla ihmisen ja ympäristön suhdetta käsittelevään kirjallisuuteen ja lasten ympäristöjen suunnittelun erityispiirteisiin. Selostusosassa käsiteltiin lisäksi suunnittelun kohteena olevan alueen taustaa ja nykytilaa ja siten lähtökohtia rakennussuunnittelulle. Päiväkotisuunnitelman taustalla on Turun kaupungilta saatu toimeksianto, jonka tavoitteena oli selvittää päiväkotitoiminnan sijoittumismahdollisuuksia Vilkkilänmäeksi kutsutulla suunnittelualueella. Alue on asemakaavan mukaista puistoa, ja tavoitteena oli arvioida, onko alueelle kaupunkikuvallisesti ja toiminnallisesti mahdollista kaavoittaa tontti päiväkotitoimintaa varten. Vaihtoehtotarkastelut esitettiin kaaviomaisina havainnekuvina selostusosassa. Tarkastelujen johtopäätöksinä valittiin reunaehdot päiväkotirakennuksen toteuttamiselle, piha-alueille ja ympäristölle. Näiden lähtötietojen pohjalta toteutettiin varsinainen päiväkodin rakennussuunnitelma. Viiden päiväkotiryhmän käyttöön suunniteltu rakennus sijoittuu puiston nurkalle täydentämään olemassa olevaa kaupunkirakennetta. Rakennus sulautuu molemmista päistään osaksi rinnettä ja puistoa. Puiston puolella päiväkodin tilat avautuvat luontoon ja kietoutuvat puiston puolelle rajautuvan pihan ympärille. Osittain kaksikerroksisen rakennuksen alemman kerroksen katto on pihakäytössä, mikä mahdollistaa suoran pihayhteyden myös toisen kerroksen tiloista. Kattopiha yhtyy saumattomasti osaksi rinteeseen sijoittuvaa metsämäistä pihaa. Kadun puolelta rakennuksen hahmo on suoraviivaisempi, puiston puolella taas pehmeämpi ja enneminkin luonnon maisemaan vertautuva. Päiväkodin tilojen lähtökohtana olivat selkeät ryhmäkohtaiset luonnon näkymiin avautuvat muunneltavat ryhmätilat, joita sitoo yhteen lasinen puiston puolelle sijoittuva eteistilojen vyöhyke. Työn tavoitteena oli suunnitella rakennus, joka tarjoaisi turvallisen, mutta elämyksellisen ympäristön lapsille leikkiä, kehittyä ja oppia.

The subject of the Master’s Thesis was to design a day care center in Vilkkilänmäki, Turku. The design-oriented Thesis includes both a conceptual design for the building and written commentary. The written commentary consists of analyses of the starting points of the design task, such as the history and current state of design area, and also includes a short study about child-friendly environments. The first part of the design project was assigned by the City of Turku. The aim was to examine whether suitable conditions for a day care center could be found in Vilkkilänmäki area. In the present state the area is zoned for park use, and the decisions about rezoning the area for day care use will be made based on the conclusions of the Thesis. Alternative design schemes were compared in diagrammatic illustrations. The comparison concluded information on the suitable size, number of floors and building typology suitable for the area. The design of the building was done based on the gained information. The designed day care center has spaces for five day-care groups. The building is located in the corner of the park and complements the existing urban structure surrounding it. The street facade is aligned with the urban structure. The facade on the park side is curved and relates more to the nature. Both ends of the building merge with the topography of the hill forming a protected playground on the park side. The building is partly one- and partly two-storied. Group spaces are located in the two-storied section. The roof of the ground floor is used as a playground and connects to a wooded playground on the hill. This allows also the group spaces on the second floor to have direct access outside. The spatial concept for the day-care center facilities was to create clearly defined but various and adaptable group spaces. Spaces are combined together with a transparent circulation zone. The aim of the Thesis was to create a safe but memorable environment for children to play, grow up and learn.
