The aim of this thesis is to look at the use of neologisms in Alastair Reynolds’s Revelation Space and to examine how they have been translated in the Finnish translation of the novel. There is not much research in the field of translation of science fiction, especially when it comes to Finnish translations. The goal of the thesis was to investigate how the translator has managed to translate the neologisms and at the same time to observe whether he has been successful in conveying the same kind of concepts as the author has intended. The structures of the words were investigated as well, as it can help to determine how they could best be translated. The data for the thesis was collected by going through the English version of the novel and then finding and examining the same sentences in the Finnish translation. This allowed for observation regarding both the individual words, and if necessary, the surrounding sentence. When it was deemed necessary, alternative translations for the neologisms were suggested. If there were a number of different translations, their merits and preference was discussed. The theoretical background of the thesis relies heavily on translation criticism, and the main methods as well as theories of the field were discussed. In order to familiarize the reader with the terminology for the analysis, word formation was also looked into, as well as the differences between Finnish and English. Some aspects of semiotics and symbolism were also discussed, as they were deemed important for interpreting the neologisms the author introduces and to assist in evaluating the translations. It was concluded that the translator had opted to usually replace the neologisms with a more general word instead of introducing neologisms into Finnish. While there were some direct loans, in most cases there were a number of translations which at times were at odds with each other. The lexical conformity of the author’s original concepts was disrupted in many occasions, and the concepts relied purely on the context of the sentence. While there were some positive observations, the general impression was confusing. The field is still lacking in research, and the scope of a Master’s thesis does not do justification to the dilemma. The research can be expanded in a multitude of ways: this thesis managed to only examine some of the neologisms, and was unable to make observations regarding any other aspects of translation regarding the novel. A morphological approach to the neologisms or the overall stylistic choices would make a good topic for future research.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli tarkastella Alastair Reynoldsin Ilmestysten Avaruus -romaanissa ilmeneviä uudissanoja ja niiden suomenkielisiä käännöksiä. Tieteiskirjallisuuden kääntämistä ei ole tutkittu laajalti, eikä varsinkaan genren suomenkielisiä käännöksiä. Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli tutkia, miten kääntäjä on onnistunut kääntämään uudissanat. Samalla tarkasteltiin onko hän kyennyt välittämään kirjailijan tarkoittamat merkitykset käännösten yhteydessä. Myös sanojen rakenteita tutkittiin, jotta pystyttäisiin päättelemään miten sanat kannattaisi kääntää. Tutkielman aineisto kerättiin käymällä läpi englanninkielinen alkuteos, minkä jälkeen vastaavat kohdat etsittiin suomenkielisestä käännöksestä. Tämä mahdollisti sekä yksittäisten sanojen että tarpeen vaatiessa myös niitä ympäröivän lauseen tarkastelun. Tilanteen niin vaatiessa ehdotettiin myös vaihtoehtoisia käännöksiä. Jos käännöksiä löytyi useita, niitä vertailtiin ja asetettiin suositeltavuusjärjestykseen. Tutkielman teoreettinen tausta nojaa vahvasti käännöskriittiseen tutkimukseen, joten alan pääasiallisia metodeja ja teorioita käytiin läpi. Jotta lukija pystyisi seuraamaan analyysissä käytettävää terminologiaa, myös sanamuodostuksen teoriaa sekä suomen ja englannin eroavaisuuksia tuotiin esille. Tiettyjä semiotiikan ja symbolismin piirteitä käsiteltiin, sillä niiden katsottiin olevan tärkeitä kirjailijan luomien uudissanojen tulkitsemisessa ja käännösten arvioinnissa. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että kääntäjä on useimmissa tilanteissa korvannut uudissanat jo olemassa olevilla käsitteillä sen sijaan, että loisi uudissanoja suomeen. Vaikka joitain suoria lainoja esiintyy, monissa tapauksissa käännökset olivat keskenään ristiriidassa. Kirjailijan luoma leksikaalinen säännönmukaisuus särkyi monissa tapauksissa ja kontekstit välittyivät pelkästään ympäröivän lauserakenteen myötä. Vaikka joitakin onnistuneitakin käännöksiä löytyi, yleinen vaikutelma oli sekava. Alan tutkimus ei merkittävästi lisäänny pelkästään pro gradu -tutkielmien avulla niiden suppeuden takia. Tutkimusta voisi laajentaa monilla tavoin: tämä tutkielma kattoi vain osan uudissanoista, eikä kyennyt kommentoimaan mitään muita kääntämisen osa-alueita. Muun muassa morfologia tai tyylilliset valinnat olisivat hyviä vaihtoehtoja jatkotutkimusta ajatellen.
