Olen halunnut diplomityössäni ymmärtää pientä tilaa sen synnyttämän tilakokemuksen ja tilassa olevan ihmisen kautta. Työni on luonteeltaan tutkielma ja se jakautuu kolmeen osaan. Aiheen rajautuminen yhdelle ihmiselle tarkoitettujen tilojen ja tilakokonaisuuksien käsittelyyn on syntynyt henkilökohtaisesta kiinnostuksestani yksin asumista ja pienen asunnon problematiikkaa kohtaan. Tärkeää on ollut oikean työskentelytavan löytyminen ja valinta tehdä työ kokeilevana. Suuri osa työstäni muodostuu pienen tilan ja ihmisen suhdetta tutkivista työmalleista. Työni kirjallisessa osassa käsittelen tilakokemuksen syntymistä sekä ihmisen mittasuhteita suunnittelun lähtökohtana. Työni taustaksi olen perehtynyt Lauri Rauhalan holistiseen ihmiskäsitykseen. Työskentelymetodina olen käyttänyt 1:50 ja 1:25 kokoisia työmalleja, jotka olen valokuvannut ja analysoinut. Mallien lähtökohtana on usein ollut mielikuva tilasta, jonka tunnelman olen yrittänyt tavoittaa. Työmallit jakautuvat tilaa, sen kokoa ja tunnelmaa, tutkiviin abstraktimpiin malleihin ja tarkemmin määritettyjen asumisen tilojen malleihin: kylpy, hygieniatila, vuode ja ruoanlaittotila. Tarkemmaksi suunnitelmaksi muodostui kaksi tilakokonaisuutta, asumusta. Näiden asumusten arkkitehtuuri on syntynyt tilojen yhdistymisestä, tilojen suhteesta toisiinsa ja käsityksestä ihmisestä tilan kokijana. Suunnitelmien fyysinen ulkomuoto on muodostunut sisältä ulos, eikä niillä ole määrättyä sijaintia. Työn edetessä olen kuitenkin voinut huomata miten asumus-työmalli alkaa etsiä itselleen sijaintia, paikkaa ja suuntaa. Kokonaisvaltainen tilakokemus on aina yksilöllinen. Suunnittelemiani asuintiloja määrittävät ihmisen perustarpeet, turvallisuuden tunteen luominen, ihmisen tilantarve ja tilojen moniaistinen kokeminen. Suunnitelmissani olen huomioinut myös ihmisen mahdollisuuden toimia tilassa vapaasti ja osallistua tilan luonteen muodostumiseen, ja tuntea siten tila omakseen. Diplomityöni suunnitelma sisältää kahden asumuksen työmallit ja niiden valokuvat, tilojen tarkemmat suunnitelmat sekä suunnitelmat kylvyn, hygieniatilan ja ruoanlaittotilan detaljiikasta.

My master’s thesis is a study of small living spaces and of a human in relation to the space. The work is experimental by its nature and it consists of three parts. My personal interest in the issues of solo living and the problems of small apartments directed me to focus on one person spaces and their compositions. It was important to find the right working method and make the decision to work in the field of experimental architecture. A major part of my thesis consists of the mock-ups that study the relationship of the space and the human in the space. In the written part of my thesis I have considered human experience of the space and the use of human proportions as a starting point of a design process. For my thesis I have familiarized myself with Lauri Rauhala’s holistic idea of man. My main working method has been using 1:50 and 1:25 scale mock-ups which I have photographed and analyzed. As the starting point of the models there has often been just an idea or a feeling of the space. Through the process I have tried to materialize these abstract images into tangible models. The mock-ups consist of spatial and more abstract models as well as more accurately defined space studies of bath, hygiene space, bed, and space for cooking. The design is formed out of two living units, dwellings. The architecture of these dwellings is created from the inside out. The main focus has been in the human experience of the space and thus in the relations between the spaces themselves. The physical form of the model is secondary and the dwellings have no real location. Though during the design process it has been interesting to notice how the dwellings have started to look for both location and orientation in my mind. The human experience of the space is always personal. In this thesis the designed spaces are defined by basic needs, human need for the sense of security, the space needed for free action and by the spatial experience that stimulates the mind. The human experience of a space and the act of making it into a place arises from the possibility to act in the space and thus identify with the space. The design consists of models, photographs, plan drawings and detailed plans of bath, hygiene space and cooking space of two separate experimental dwellings.
