This Bachelor’s Thesis examines the use of swearing in the television series The Wire. It answers the questions how and why profanities are used by the characters, does the harsh language have an effect on the conversations themselves or does it have a noticeable effect on the outcome of the exchanges. Conversation analysis is utilized in order to answer these questions. While swearing is largely a cultural phenomenon, this paper uses a list of seven swearwords as a basis of what is considered as “harsh” language, as well as some politically incorrect expressions such as racial slurs. The data itself comes from a few scenes from two episodes of the first season of The Wire, namely “The Target” and “Game Day”. Based on this data, there are two distinct occurrences of swearing in conversations: complaints and directives. However, it would seem that swearing does not have much of an effect on the conversations or on their outcomes, but that the characters are conscious of their language use and can change it according to the other parties in the conversation. Deeper analysis also reveals details about the characters’ relationships and attitudes.

Tässä tutkimuksessa käsitellään kiroilua ja kirosanojen käyttöä yhdysvaltalaisen HBO-kaapelikanavan televisiosarjassa The Wire. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen pohja perustuu keskustelunanalyysille (conversation analysis). Lisäksi määritellään, mitä itse kiroilu on. Kiroilun perusteena on seitsemän sanan lista. Lisäksi esimerkiksi rasistiset ilmaukset voivat tietyissa asiayhteyksissä olla kirosanoja. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten kirosanoja käytetään keskusteluissa ja vaikuttaako kiroilu keskustelujen kulkuun tai niiden sisältöön. Itse tutkimuksen materiaali koostuu muutamasta satunnaisesti valitusta kohtauksesta The Wire -sarjan ensimmäisen kauden jaksoista ”The Target” sekä ”Game Day”. Käytetyn materiaalin perusteella kiroilun käyttämisestä erottuu selkeästi kaksi eri tapaustyyppiä: asioista valittaminen sekä ohjeiden tai käskyjen antaminen. Tutkimuksen perusteella on kuitenkin todettava, että kiroilu tai kirosanojen käyttäminen ei suoranaisesti vaikuta keskustelujen kulkuun, mutta sen sijaan kiroilu tai kiroilematta oleminen paljastaa yksityiskohtia hahmojen keskinäisestä hierarkiasta sekä hahmojen asenteista.
