This research examines the protagonist of the fantasy novel The Name of the Wind written by Patrick Rothfuss. The goal is to establish that the given protagonist is not an archetypal hero or villain character, but rather he transcends the simplistic binary definitions of hero and villain by acting on humane drives and understandable reasons, both of which can contribute towards good or evil. The paper draws upon multiple sources to determine a) the importance of character, b) the definition of archetypes and c) the traits exhibited by hero and villain characters. These are then used as a foundation for the analysis. The most significant sources used are the works of Joseph Campbell, Porter Abbott and Mike Alsford. The analysis revealed that the protagonist’s portrayal remains mostly heroic in the novel, but villainy is present throughout the novel, either apparent or heavily implied. Despite being only the first of three novels in the Kingkiller Chronicle, The Name of the Wind gives the reader a strong impression of a complex character that is not strictly good or evil, but rather humane. To conduct a deeper analysis of character in the future, the entire trilogy should be read and examined, and see if the conclusions drawn in this paper are based.

Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee Patrick Rothfussin kirjoittaman Tuulen nimi -fantasiaromaanin päähenkilöä. Tavoitteena on osoittaa, että kyseinen päähenkilö ei ole arkkityyppinen sankari- tai pahishahmo, vaan hän ylittää pelkistetyt binaariset määritelmät sankarin ja pahiksen välillä käyttäytymällä ymmärrettävistä syistä ja inhimillisiin pyrkimyksiin nojaten, joista molemmat voivat aiheuttaa sekä hyvää, että pahaa. Tutkielma käyttää useita lähteitä määritelläkseen a) hahmojen tärkeyden, b) arkkityypit ja c) sankareiden ja pahisten luonteenpiirteet. Näitä käytettiin analyysin pohjana. Merkittävimmät käytetyt lähteet ovat Joseph Campbellin, Porter Abbottin ja Mike Alsfordin teokset. Analyysissä paljastui, että päähenkilön kuvaus pysyy suurimmalta osin sankarillisena, mutta pahuus on näkyvillä koko romaanin ajan joko selvästi tai epäsuorasti. Vaikka Tuulen nimi onkin Kuninkaantappajan kronikan ensimmäinen osa, se antaa lukijalle vahvan mielikuvan monimutkaisesta hahmosta, joka ei ole tiukasti hyvä eikä paha, vaan ennemminkin inhimillinen. Tulevaisuudessa koko trilogia tulisi lukea ja tutkia, jotta syvempi analyysi voidaan tehdä ja tämän tutkimuksen johtopäätökset varmistaa perustelluiksi.
