Diplomityö “Pudasjärven hirsinen monitoimitalo” on suunnitelmapainotteinen työ, jonka tarkoituksena on ollut tehdä noin 8 500 asukkaan Pudasjärven kaupungille viitesuunnitelma hirsistä monitoimitaloa varten. Se on suunnittelututkimuksena osa Oulun yliopiston arkkitehtuurin tiedekunnan Moderni hirsikaupunki -tutkimushanketta. Työ alkoi joulukuussa 2016 Moderni hirsikaupunki -tutkimushankkeen esiselvitysraporttiin sekä yleisesti hirsirakentamiseen tutustumalla. Tammi–huhtikuun ajan työ on ollut palkallista osana tutkimushanketta. Työtä on ohjannut Moderni hirsikaupunki -tutkimushankkeen johtaja, rakennusopin professori Janne Pihlajaniemi. Monitoimitalo on jatkumoa Pudasjärven julkisille hirsirakennuskohteille, kuten päiväkodille, koulukampukselle sekä vanhusten palvelutalolle. Suunnitelmaa on tarkoitus käyttää suunnittelualueen kaavoituksen sekä monitoimitalon jatkosuunnittelun tukena. Monitoimitalon suunnittelua varten perustettiin monitoimitalotyöryhmä, joka kokoontui kevään 2017 aikana kolmesti Pudasjärven kaupungintalolla. Työryhmään ovat kuuluneet itseni ja Janne Pihlajaniemen lisäksi Pudasjärven kaupungin sekä rakennukseen sijoittuvien eri toimintojen edustajia. Työn edetessä olemme käyneet Pudasjärvellä esittelemässä suunnitelmia monitoimitalotyöryhmälle. Esittelyjen jälkeen käydyt keskustelut ovat ohjanneet suunnittelua. Suunnittelukohde sijaitsee Pohjois-Pohjanmaan maakunnassa Pudasjärven kaupungin keskustaajamassa. Monitoimitalon suunnittelualue sijoittuu Pudasjärven keskustan länsipuolelle nykyisen Kurenalan koulun tontille. 50-luvun koulurakennus on laajalti homeessa ja ollaan aikeissa purkaa. Kortteli rajoittuu lännessä valtatie 20:een (Oulu-Kuusamontie), etelässä ja idässä uuteen suunniteltuun valtatieltä Pudasjärven keskustaan vievään liittymään ja pohjoisessa Rimmintiehen. Rakennus sijoittuu tontin lounaislaidalle valtatien ja uuden liittymän muodostamaan kulmaukseen toimien kaupungin uutena maamerkkinä. Monitoimitalon arkkitehtoninen ratkaisu on innoittunut perinteisten hirsikehikoiden selkeydestä ja suorakulmaisuudesta, mikä on hirren käytölle ominaista. Rakennuksessa on hirsisen sisääntulokerroksen lisäksi betoninen, osittain maanpäällinen kellarikerros. Hirsi materiaalina saa näkyä vahvasti sekä ulko- että sisätiloissa. Talon erityispiirteisiin kuuluvat leikatun pyramidin malliset katot sekä kattoikkunoiden runsas käyttö. Poikkeava kattomuoto pienentää rakennuksen koettua mittakaavaa ja vähentää rakennuksen varjostavuutta, kun katon räystäät laskeutuvat matalalle. Rakennus on pilkottu neljään suorakulmaiseen osaan, mikä osaltaan muuttaa laajan rakennuksen koettua mittakaavaa inhimillisemmäksi. Kattomuoto näkyy voimakkaasti sisätiloissa. Rakennuksen päätila on avara kirjastosali, jonka yllä oleva suuri kattoikkuna tekee tilasta erittäin valoisan. Rakennuksen keskelle sijoittuu pieni sadepiha, joka kattoikkunoiden kanssa luo sisätilaan rauhallisen ja hengittävän tunnelman. Työn olennainen osa on ollut monitoimitalohankkeen viitesuunnitelman tekeminen. Erityistä huomiota on kiinnitetty rakennuksen ja pohjien toimivuuteen sekä hyvin erilaisten tilojen yhteensovittamiseen eheäksi kokonaisuudeksi. Tilojen sijoittumisen ja mitoituksen kautta on pyritty monitoimitalon yhteiskäyttöpotentiaalin maksimaaliseen hyödyntämiseen. Pohjien suunnittelussa on pyritty selkeyteen ja käytännöllisyyteen. Alustavassa tilaohjelmassa monitoimitaloon kuuluivat elokuvateatteri, jäähalli pukuhuoneineen, keilahalli, kahvio, kirjasto ja sen yhteyteen nuorisotila sekä yhdistävät aulatilat. Suunnitelman edetessä tilaohjelmaan ovat tulleet lisäksi näyttelytila, ryhmäliikuntatila pukuhuoneineen, toimistotilaa sekä tarpeelliset huolto- ja tekniikkatilat. Nuorisotila on siirtynyt kirjaston yhteydestä omaksi tilakseen ja elokuvateatteri on muuttunut monitoimisaliksi, joka toimii myös auditoriona, teatterisalina sekä konserttisalina.

This thesis is design oriented and its aim has been in making a preliminary plan for a new Community Centre with a log structure for the small town of Pudasjärvi. As research through design, it has been part of the ‘Moderni hirsikaupunki’ (Modern logtown) research project of the Oulu School of Architecture. The work began in December 2016 with getting acquainted with the preliminary report of the research project and log building in general. From January until April the work has been paid as a part of the research project. The thesis has been guided by the leader of the research project, professor Janne Pihlajaniemi. The Community Centre will be part of the generation of public log building built in Pudasjärvi in recent years, like the new kindergarten, school campus and the assisted living building for the elderly. This work is meant to help in future town planning of the area and further design of the Community Centre. For the planning of the Community Centre was founded the “Community Centre Working Group”, which gathered three times at Pudasjärvi Town Hall during spring 2017. In addition to myself and Janne Pihlajaniemi, the workgroup consisted of representatives of both the town of Pudasjärvi and the different functions set into the building. As the project went on we presented the design regularly for the rest of the working group. The discussions after the presentations have guided the design considerably. The town of Pudasjärvi with around 8 500 inhabitants is located in the region of Northern Ostrobothnia, one hours drive to north-east from the city of Oulu. The design area for the Community Centre is located west from the town centre on the lot of the existing School of Kurenala. The school from 1950’s has widespread problems with mould and is about to be demolished. The lot is bordered with route 20 (Oulu-Kuusamontie) in the west, a new design for a junction and a road from the route to the town centre in the south and east, and Rimmintie road in the north. The building is located on the south-western corner of the lot adjacent to the route 20 and the new road to the town centre, and will thus work as a future landmark for Pudasjärvi. The architecture of the Community Centre was inspired by the simplicity and perpendicularity of the framework of traditional log buildings, qualities which are characteristic to log structures. In addition to the entrance floor with its log frame structure the building has a concrete basement floor that is partly above ground. Wood as material is strongly present in both outdoor and indoor spaces. Buildings special charasteristics include the exceptional roofs with the shape of cut pyramids and the numerous skylight windows that bring natural light inside the deep building. Thanks to the low eaves the deviant shape of the roofs makes the experienced scale of the vast building smaller and also decreases the shading of the building. The building has been split into four smaller perpendicular parts, which for its part makes the experienced scale of the building more humane. The shape of the roof is strongly visible also indoors. The main space of the building is the spacious and bright library hall with it’s vast skylight. In the middle of the building is located a small courtyard, which together with the skylights creates a calm and airy atmosphere inside the building. The essential part of this thesis has been the making of the referential design for the new Community Centre. Special effort has been put into the functionality of the building and its plan and coordination of the widely different functions into one harmonious entity. The placing and dimensioning of the different spaces has been optimised for maximum potential for shared use. Clarity and functionality have been pursued in the design of the plans. The preliminary building program included a movie theatre, hockey rink with locker rooms, bowling hall, cafeteria, library and a youth centre adjacent to it, and a shared lobby between these functions. As the plans proceeded the building program expanded to include also an exhibition space, a small gymnasium with locker rooms, office space and the necessary technical and maintenance spaces. The youth centre has been moved from the library into its own space. The movie theatre transformed into a multi-purpose hall that functions also as auditorium, theatre and concert hall.
