Tiivistelmä

Diplomityöni, Tulevaisuuden ostari, tutkii Helsingin lähiöiden keskuksia ja ehdotan konseptitasoisen uudistuksen Kontulan ostarille syksyllä vuonna 2018. Tavoitteeni on tutkia miten arkkitehtuurilla voi parantaa alueen yleiskuvaa kunnioittaen vanhaa ostoskeskusrakennusta. Työssä osallistan kontulalaisia nuoria kertomaan, mitkä tekijät parantaisivat heidän viihtyvyyttä lähiökeskuksessa.

Diplomityö koostuu kolmesta osasta, joista ensimmäisessä käyn läpi lähiöiden kehityskaarta, ilmiöitä ja säilyttämiseen liittyviä ristiriitoja. Toinen osa käsittelee osallistamista suunnitteluprosessissa, ja miten huomioin nuorten mielipiteitä arkkitehtisuunnittelussa. Työn empiirinen aineisto on kerätty Kontulan nuorisotalolla järjestetystä työpajasta toukokuussa 2018. Työpajaan osallistui 23 nuorta, joiden havaintoja ostariympäristöstä käsittelen diplomityön osassa 2. Viimeisessä osassa esittelen oman suunnitelmani, Kontula-talo kehitysehdotukseni ostarin tulevaisuudelle, johon kuuluu muun muassa monitoimitiloja, kulttuuritiloja ja julkinen sauna. Suunnitelmassa olen tarkastellut myös ostarin liittymistä sen ympäristöön, jossa ehdotukseni mukaan monitoimitalo on alueen tärkein yhteisö- ja viihdekeskus.

Työssäni annan vanhalle lähiökeskukselle uuden tulevaisuuden niin, että sen arkkitehtoniset kerrostukset jäävät osaksi rakennuksen tarinaa. Rakennusperintöä tulee säilyttää ja arvostaa, rakennuksen historia on vain 50 vuotta vanha. Toivon, että keskus saa uudella arkkitehtuurilla elämää vielä tulevat vuosikymmenet ja, että erityisesti nuorille turvataan paikka ajanviettoon ja oleskeluun.

Suburban community centre : a participatory design concept for suburban centre of Kontula

Abstract

This project, Suburban community centre, is a research of the suburban centres of Helsinki, which are mainly built between the years 1950 and 1970. The aim is to develop the central of Kontula area and suggest a new building to be a part of its old shopping centre. This suggestion is a development for the central area to be more attractive to the residents and visitors. Also, I participated children from Kontula youth centre and asked them what they consider as the important factors in their daily environment.

The thesis is divided into three parts, where the first one is a research of Helsinki suburbs in general and what has happened to the modernist commercial centres in Finland. The second part is describing the participatory design, which is based on a workshop in Kontula that took place in May 2018. In this part, I describe how participating the users influenced my design work and what were the key functions that children want to do in the community centre. The workshop had participants aged 7–18 years old and altogether 23 people participated. In the last part, I present my own design for Kontula, where the new community centre is the most important meeting point and entertainment building of the residential area.

In this work, I concentrate on the outskirts of the Helsinki city area and give a new life to a building, which has now been waiting for its renovation for a decade. The architectural heritage should be preserved and valued as the building is only 50 years old. The community of Kontula, especially children and youth, need a new place for meeting friends and entertain themselves.
