Tiivistelmä
Tutkin diplomityöni ensimmäisessä vaiheessa esimerkkikohteita pohjoismaisilta kirkonkyliltä, joissa modernin rakennuksen käyttötarkoitusta on onnistuneesti muutettu.
In the first part of my diploma thesis I studied several buildings in the Nordic countries where an adaptive reuse project has been successfully completed in a small parish. We lack tangible examples of successful adaptive reuse projects where the subjects have been modern buildings in rural and lesser populated towns. In my thesis, I have studied altogether four examples in Finland and Sweden of which I examined their starting situations, the buildings’ current states and the problems the projects faced during their respective adaptive reuse processes. At the end of each example, I composed some thoughts on how to utilize the positive and negative factors of each project into other possible reuse projects in Finland. All the example buildings are built between 1960–80 and are located in parishes with populations of less than 6000 people. I chose to study different types of buildings which have been reused with different budjets and in differing circumstances.
In the second part of the diploma thesis I produced an adaptive reuse plan for the Kangasniemi fire station as a case study and to possibly implement some positive aspects of the aforementioned projects. As the fire stations current spaces grow more cramped by each passing day, due to growing equipment and safety demands, the activity has to sooner or later change location and the fire station needs to find a new function for itself. The new proposed function needs to take into consideration the opportunities and restrictions that the building’s historic layering offer, the future plans of Kangasniemi and a profitable function that takes into consideration the location and it’s demographics. The proposal also needed to take into consideration the surrounding areas around the fire station and provide improvements. I laid the groundwork for my proposal by shortly studying both the history of fire stations in Finland and the history of Kangasniemi. I also studied other fire stations in Finland which now serve a new function after successful reuse adaptations.
To support my proposal, I created drawings of the current situation of the Kangasniemi fire station, as well as mapping out the layers of the different building phases which I utilized to create the drawings for the new proposal. I divided the multiple spaced station into different parts, that could provide services for the local people in the form of a multi-purpose event center. That way one or several entrepreneurs could run their own businessess in the same building and benefit from each other’s successes. At the same time, the building would work in a symbiotic relationship with the neighbouring square and the other services provided by the town. The proposed functions are all needed in Kangasniemi, and have all been suggested to me by locals through a public social media forum. The solutions take into account the ageing demographic and the fluctuating population between the summer and winter times, but also make a solid attempt to bring some new vitality to the heart of Kangasniemi.
