Tiivistelmä

Tämä diplomityö on suunnitelmapainotteinen työ, jonka aiheena on uusi hotelli- ja virkistysuimala Sodankylän keskustaan. Pääpaino on näiden kahden muodostama kokonaisuus Jeesiöjoen rannalla, jota tutkin luonnossuunnitelman avulla. Kantavia aiheeseen liittyviä teemoja ovat puurakentamisen ohella hyvinvointi ja arktinen ympäristö.

Alkuperäinen suunnitelma on toteutettu Sodankylän arktinen puurakentaminen -hankkeelle, jonka tarkoituksena on elvyttää Sodankylässä vielä 90-luvulla vahvana ollutta puuteollisuuskeskittymää. Työn aihe on peräisin Sodankylän kunnalta, joka hankkeen puitteissa toivoi suunnittelijan tutkivan hotellin yleissuunnitelmaa, kaavoituksen tueksi sekä yleisesti alueen markkinointiin julkiseksi hotelli- ja uimahallirakentamisen alueeksi.

Olen jakanut diplomityön kolmeen toisiinsa kytkeytyvään osioon: Diplomityön taustalla vaikuttaviin asioihin, suunnittelupaikan tutkimiseen ja esittelyyn sekä lopullisen suunnitelman esittelyyn.

Tausta: Ensimmäinen osio käsittelee diplomityön taustalla olleita vaikuttimia ja lähtöasetelmia, avaa diplomityöprosessiani, ja käsittelee pintapuolisesti joitain inspiraationkin lähteinä toimineita esimerkkejä Pohjoismaista. Osio sisältää myös kertausta hyvinvointimatkailun historian eri vaiheista ja pohdintaa hyvinvoinnista sekä wellness-matkailun tulevaisuudesta Suomessa ja Sodankylässä.

Paikka: Toisessa osassa keskitän huomion suunnittelupaikkaan, Sodankylään, sen historiaan, nykyhetkeen ja tulevaisuuteen, fokusoiden lopulta tarkemmin itse suunnittelualueen problematiikkaan ja mahdollisuuksiin.

Suunnitelma: Viimeinen osio esittelee lopullisen luonnossuunnitelman Sodankylän uudesta virkistäytymisen keskuksesta, johon kuuluvat 3–5 kerroksinen hotellirakennus ja kaksikerroksinen virkistysuimala, sekä erillinen, Jeesiöjoen rannassa kelluva saunarakennus.

Arctic wooden construction of Sodankylä : wellness-hotel and swimming facility in Sodankylä

Abstract

This master’s thesis is a design oriented work, the topic of which is a new hotel and recreational swimming pool in the center of Sodankylä. The main focus is on the wholeness of the two on the banks of the Jeesiö River, which I study through schematic plan. In addition to timber construction, the main themes related to the topic are well-being and arctic environment.

The original plan has been implemented for the Sodankylä Arctic Timber Construction project, which aims to revive the wood industry concentration that was still strong in Sodankylä in the 1990s. The subject of the work originates from the municipality of Sodankylä, which within the framework of the project hoped that the designer would study the master plan of a hotel, in support of zoning and, more generally, the marketing of the area as a public hotel and swimming pool construction area.

I have divided the thesis into three inter-related sections: the underlying issues of the thesis, the study of the location related and the presentation of the final plan.

Background: The first section deals with the motives and starting points behind the thesis, reveal my dissertation process, and superficially discusses some of the nordic examples that also served as sources of inspiration for my diploma. The section also includes a review of the various stages of the history of wellness tourism and reflection on well-being and the future of wellness tourism in Finland and Sodankylä.

Location: In the second part, I focus on the design site, Sodankylä, its history, present and future, and finally focus more closely on the problems and opportunities of the design area itself.

Plan: The last section presents the final sketch plan for Sodankylä’s new recreation center, which includes 3 to 5-storey hotel building and a two-storey recreational swimming pool, as well as a separate sauna building floating in the Jeesiö River.
