Tiivistelmä

Työssä lukijalle esitellään nelitahtimoottorien historia, toiminta ja perehdytään erilaisiin ratkaisuihin päästöjen vähentämiseksi. Työn tavoitteena on antaa lukijalle kokonaiskuva nelitahtimoottorista ensin käymällä läpi sen historiaa keksimisestä lähtien ja tämän jälkeen esittelemällä yksinkertaisen nelitahtimoottorin toimintaperiaatteen, toimintaa tukevia järjestelmiä ja polttomoottoriin liittyvää termodynamiikkaa. Tämän jälkeen työssä pohditaan nelitahtimoottorien päästöjä autoteollisuuden näkökulmasta ja mietitään, kuinka päästöjä saataisiin vähennettyä tulevaisuudessa.

Four-stroke engines

Abstract

In this thesis, the reader is presented to the history of the four-stroke engine, its operation and is acquainted with the solutions to reduce emissions. The aim of this thesis is to give the reader a general view of the four-stroke engine by first presenting its history, then introducing the main operating principle, the supporting systems, and the basic thermodynamics of an internal combustion engine. After this, the four-stroke engine’s emissions and how to reduce them in the future are discussed by the automotive industry’s point of view.
