Tiivistelmä
Tausta ja tavoitteet. Yhteisopettajuus on yksi yhteistyön toteuttamisen muoto. Se voidaan määritellä kahden tai useamman opetusalan ammattilaisen samassa fyysisessä tilassa monimuotoiselle oppilasryhmälle antamaksi opetukseksi. Yhteisopettajuuden merkitys on korostunut inklusiivisen kasvatusajattelun yleistyttyä. Yhteisopettajuutta on tutkittu varhaiskasvatuksen puitteissa opetuksen eriyttämis- ja muokkaamistoimien, opettajien keskinäisten suhteiden ja hyödynsaajien näkökulmista. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli muodostaa kokonaiskuva yhteisopettajuuskokeiluun osallistuneiden varhaiskasvatuksen erityisopettajien (VEO) ja varhaiskasvatuksen opettajien (VO) yhteisopettajuuskäsityksistä ennen yhteisopettajuuskokeilun käytännön toteutusta sekä kokeilun aikana.
Toteutus. Tutkimus toteutettiin kysely- ja haastattelututkimuksena. Kyselyyn osallistui seisemän varhaiskasvatuksen erityisopettajaa ja seisemän varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaa. Haastattelut toteutettiin VEO:n ja VO:n työparihaastatteluina (n=3). Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin fenomenografista analyysia ja lähestymistapaa.
Tulokset.
Background and objectives. Co-teaching is a way to implement collaboration. It can be defined as teaching given in a single physical space by at least two or more teaching professionals to a diverse group of students. The meaning of co-teaching has been highlighted with the more recent generalization of inclusive educational thinking. Co-teaching has been studied within the framework of early childhood education from the point of views of differentiated instructions and modifications, interpersonal relationships between teachers, and the beneficiaries. The aim of the research was to form a holistic picture of the perceptions of early childhood education teachers (ECE teacher) and early childhood special education teachers (ECSE teacher) about co-teaching before the co-teaching experiment and during it.
Implementation. The research was conducted as a questionnaire and interview study. Seven ECSE teachers and seven ECE teachers participated in the questionnaire. The interviews were conducted in pairs of ECSE teachers and ECE teachers (n=3). A phenomenographic research analysis and approach was used in this research.
Results. According to the results of this research, co-teaching is defined as ECSE teachers’ and ECE teachers’ mutual planning, implementing, assessing and developing actions based on the needs of the children which utilizes the professional skills of both of these groups of teachers by applying different forms of work and takes into account full time pedagogy. Co-teaching was found to fit well in the work description of ECSE teachers, as long as mutual planning and preparing time, the adequacy of ECSE teachers’ resources, the re-assessing of the job description and the field of operation and the compatibility of the teachers were actualized. The gained benefits of co-teaching for the teachers that were identified were the potential to learn and adapt into new roles, the availability of special education competence, the reinforcement of collaboration and interaction, the increase of mental wellbeing in the workplace and the improvement of the working conditions. The identified benefits of co-teaching for the children were the better possibilities for individual support, the reinforcement of interaction and the special expertise gained from the ECSE teachers. The challenges of co-teaching were mainly to do with diversity, relationships between teachers, attitudes and commitment and the practical arrangements, especially finding and arranging common planning times.
Conclusions. According to the perceptions of the teachers working in the early childhood education, co-teaching should be seen more broadly than just as mutually planned teaching times, it should be present in all the activities during the day as a way of constant mutual collaboration. The results from this study can be utilized especially in the development of the job description of ECSE teachers and the implementation of co-teaching to early childhood education.
