The purpose of this work was to characterize the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of a PZT thin film by atomic force microscopy. PZT is one of the most widely used piezoelectric ceramics due to its excellent properties but accurate measurement techniques are needed to develop the material even more.
Piezoresponse force microscopy is an application of atomic force microscopy which can image, in addition to the topography of the sample’s surface, its piezoelectric and ferroelectric behavior. A Bruker MultiMode 8-HR atomic force microscope was used to determine the piezoelectric deformation, orientation, and switching of the PZT sample’s ferroelectric domains. A topography image of the thin film was also taken from which surface roughness could be analyzed.
Amplitude and phase images of the piezoresponse showed that most of the ferroelectric domains in the sample were upwardly polarized c-domains. Hysteresis loops obtained from local PFM measurements displayed the ferroelectric behavior of the sample. Lastly, switching of polarization was demonstrated by ferroelectric lithography, and it was found that the c-domains were originally polarized towards the surface.
