Abstract

This diploma thesis aims to produce a new, viable and architecturally high-quality design concept of remote working spaces for knowledge workers, emphasising the presence of nature or outdoors. The dissertation consists of two main parts. The first one is the theoretical background in which I provide sufficient theory through existing literature and research regarding the subject. At the end of the first part, I conclude the most important findings and discoveries that are meaningful in the context of the design phase of the thesis.

The second part of the dissertation is called the design concept. In this part, I apply the notions approved from the theory and aim to produce a believable concept involving remote working units and the supporting central building near them. First, I provide my reasoning behind the main concept and after that, I explore the architecture related to the buildings. The concept is approached through two case studies, which aim to implement the concept in two different locations providing concrete examples of how the buildings could endure in various situations. In addition to this, the structural details are analysed, and physical realities of the building process are explored, such as the thermal performance of the structures of the indoor and semi-outdoor spaces.

During the recent covid-19 pandemic, people have been affected by the remote-working phenomena. Many people have started exploring new and innovative places to do their work as remote work has gained popularity among the knowledge workers. Since knowledge working has become one of the main forms of labour in our modern society and considering the contemporary nature of the topic, there are not many viable options to work remotely outdoors or in semi-outdoor environments at the moment at least in Finland. Another aspect of the subject that I have been noting is the call back to the nature of the modern urban dwellers, which has been further emphasized by the pandemic.

These premises in mind and the groundwork done in the research in architecture course formed the basis for this thesis to provide carefully thought-out solutions and design concepts for the growing need for working remotely and more specifically in the outdoors.

Tiivistelmä

Diplomityön tarkoitus on luoda uusi, arkkitehtonisesti korkealaatuinen ja mahdollisimman toteuttamiskelpoinen tilakonsepti ulkotiloissa, luonnon keskellä tapahtuvaan etätyöhön tietotyöläisten tarpeisiin. Työ koostuu kahdesta eri pääluvusta. Ensimmäisessä pääluvussa hahmottelen teoreettisen viitekehyksen tarkastelemalla suunnittelutyön kannalta keskeisiä ilmiöitä ja käsitteitä olemassa olevan kirjallisuuden ja tutkimusten kautta. Osion lopussa tiivistetään pääkohdat ja huomiot, jotka ovat merkityksellisiä varsinaisen suunnittelutyön kannalta.

Toinen pääluku koostuu suunnittelukonseptista. Tässä osassa sovellan teoriaosuudesta nousseita huomioita ja luon niihin pohjautuvan suunnittelukonseptin, joka koostuu ulkotyöskentelyyn soveltuvista etätyöskentely-yksiköistä ja niihin liittyvästä tukirakennuksesta. Aluksi käsittelen suunnittelukonseptin keskeisiä piirteitä, jonka jälkeen esittelen yksiköiden ja tukirakennuksen arkkitehtuuria. Suunnittelukonseptia lähestytään kahden tapaustutkimuksen kautta, joilla pyritään kuvaamaan konkreettisia tilanteita ja paikkoja, joihin konseptia voisi soveltaa. Suunnitelmiin sisältyy myös rakenteellisia perusteluja ja rakennusteknisiä pohdintoja mm. paloturvallisuudesta sekä rakenteiden lämmöneristävyydestä.

Viimeaikaisen covid-19 pandemian aikana suuri joukko ihmisiä on joutunut siirtymään etätöihin. Monet ovat alkaneet etsimään uusia paikkoja, mistä käsin työtä olisi mahdollista tehdä etänä. Kuitenkin ilmiön ajankohtaisuuden vuoksi ainakaan Suomessa ei ole tällä hetkellä montaa arkkitehtonisesti korkealaatuista kohdetta tai tilaa työskennellä etänä puolilämpimissä tiloissa. Erityisesti sellaisia, jotka olisivat suunniteltu lähtökohtaisesti tietotyöläisten tarpeisiin sekä keskittyvät käyttäjän ja paikan väliseen luontosuhteeseen.

Nämä lähtökohdat sekä aikaisemmin arkkitehtuurin tutkimuskurssilla tehty tutkimustyö loivat pohjan ja tarpeen tälle diplomityölle. Tarkoitus on luoda hyvin perusteltuja suunnitteluratkaisuja ulko- ja puolilämpimissä tiloissa tapahtuvan etätyön tarpeisiin.
