Tiivistelmä

Diplomityöni aiheena on Suvilahden Monitoimitalon konseptisuunnitelma. Suunnitelmapainotteisen työn tavoitteena on aktivoida tapahtuma-aluetta sekä luoda linkki uuden kulttuurikeskuksen ja vanhan voimalaitoksen välille. Diplomityön ohjaajana on toiminut Oulun Yliopiston Arkkitehtuurin yksikön professori Anssi Lassila.

Sörnäisten kaupunginosa tulee kehittymään ja kasvamaan seuraavan 20 vuoden aikana. Vuoteen 2040 mennessä Sörnäisten kaupunginosan asukasluvun on ennustettu kasvavan yli puolella uuden rakentamisen ohella. Alueen vetonaulana käytetään hyvää saavutettavuutta, monipuolisten palveluiden tarjontaa sekä alueen kulttuuritoimintaa.

Vaikka koko kaupunginosa pursuaa erikaltaisia kulttuurikohteita, voidaan Suvilahden entistä sähkö- ja kaasulaitosaluetta kutsua Sörnäisten ylivoimaiseksi kulttuurikeskittymäksi. Siitä on jo nyt muodostunut urbaani teollisuushenkinen tapahtuma-alue, joka toimii alustana erilaisille festivaaleille ja suurtapahtumille. Kiinteistö Kaapeli Oy hallinnoi Suvilahden tapahtuma-aluetta vuokraten tiloja eri kulttuuritoimijoille sekä yksittäisten tapahtumien käyttöön.

Suvilahden jo olemassa olevia rakennuksia kunnostetaan, mutta alueelle halutaan myös rakentaa uutta. Uudet suunnitelmat koskevat tapahtuma-alueen laajentamista sen viereiselle tontille Kulttuurikorttelin muodossa. Alueen kulttuuritoiminta halutaan keskittää uuden tapahtumakorttelin ympäristöön ja Helsingin kaupunki tavoittelee Suvilahdesta eheää kokonaisuutta. Kuitenkin tämän hetkisten suunnitelmien myötä Suvilahteen on syntymässä kaksi toisistaan erillistä tapahtuma-aluetta, jotka houkuttelevat vierailijoita vaan suurtapahtumien ympärille.

Suvilahti tarvitsee vierailijoita arkena, jotta alueen kulttuurikeskuksen imago pysyisi vahvana myös sesongin ulkopuolella. Päämääränä on tehdä Suvilahdesta osa kaupunkilaisten aktiivista arkea. Paras kulttuurin muoto syntyy ihmisten rutiinien ja elämisen tuloksena eikä vain muutaman kerran vuodessa tapahtuvien spektaakkeleiden kustannuksella.

Suunnittelen Suvilahteen Monitoimitalon, joka luo linkin kahden irrallisen tapahtuma-keskuksen välille. Uudisrakennus saavuttaa yhtenäisen ja vankan tapahtuma-alustan samalla kunnioittaen ympärillä sijaitsevia kaupunkihistoriallisesti arvokkaita rakennuksia. Tyhjän tapahtuma-kentän virkistäminen ja uusien aktiviteettien tuominen muovaavat aluetta aktiivisempaan suuntaan vahvistamalla Suvilahden asemaa Helsingin kulttuurikeskuksena.

The concept plan of Suvilahti Multifunctional House

Abstract

The subject of my thesis is the Concept Plan for the Suvilahti Multifunctional House. The aim of the design-based work is to activate the event area and to create a link between the new cultural center and the old power plant. The director of the Master’s thesis has been Anssi Lassila, professor of practice in contemporary architecture at the University of Oulu.

The district of Sörnäinen is going to develop and grow over the next 20 years. By the year 2040, the population of Sörnäinen is predicted to grow more than half of its current population due to the new construction. The area’s main attractions are good accessibility, versatile services and cultural activities.

Although the entire district is full of cultural sites, the former electricity and gas plant area of Suvilahti can be called Sörnäinen’s cultural center. It has formed an urban industrial event area as being a platform for various festivals and major events. The Event Area of Suvilahti is managed by Kiinteistö Kaapeli Oy, who is also in charge of the renting of the facilities for different cultural and private operators.

The existing buildings of Suvilahti will be renovated, but there is also a need to build something new in the area. The new plans concern the expansion of the event area to its adjacent site in the form of a cultural block. There is an urge to centralize the area’s cultural activities in the surrounding of the new event block. The City of Helsinki is aiming for an intact and functional form of Suvilahti Event Area. However, with current plans, two separate event areas are appearing in Suvilahti. They both do attract visitors but only for major events.

Suvilahti needs visitors on an everyday basis to keep the area’s cultural center image strong even outside the season. The goal is to make Suvilahti part of the everyday life of the citizens. The best form of culture is born as a result of human routines and living, not just a once a year visit at the expense of spectacles.

I have designed a Multifunctional House in Suvilahti, which creates a link between two event areas. The new building reaches for a steady and united platform for events while respecting the historically valuable buildings. With activating the empty event field and bringing new activities around Suvilahti will shape the area towards its lively and more versatile form while simultaneously strengthening the status of Suvilahti as a cultural center of Helsinki.
